A sunny Bank Holiday

Bank holidays are always strange days for me. More often than not, the weather is not up to much and I tend to waste it doing as little as possible, secure in the knowledge that no one else is in the office today so they can’t be chasing me for things or sending me the obligatory 60 emails a day (and that’s just on average).

But this morning, the sun is shining like no other bank holiday I can remember (well it is in Edinburgh – shame if it’s not the same where you are). I’ve already been out for a walk to the shops to pick up some stuff for breakfast. Being typically Scottish , even though the sky is clear blue and it is now May, I couldn’t quite believe the temperature would be, well… temperate. But jings, crivens, help ma bob (send me a comment and I’ll explain if you don’t know what that is all about), my oxters were dripping before I got half  mile. Summer is here, for one day only knowing this place.

So it is out with the faded shorts, scabby sandals and my best ripped t-shirt for a trip to Princes Street Gardens, the only place to be on a day like this. Once I’ve slapped on the factor -40 vegetable oil (I wonder if that counts as one of my five portions of fruit and veg a day?) to make sure I get that perfect lobster tan, we’ll have a little picnic and watch the drunks and junkies make a fool of themselves.

Of course, we’ll be the posh ones, with my ipod and fancy earphones, my moleskin notebook to pretend to write things in, and a bottle of wine to pass the day. Maybe some smoked salmon, who knows. The day is what we want to make of it.

I had intended doing some work today to catch up on stuff I didn’t get done last week and get ahead for this week, but there are times when being with my family is much more important, and this is one of those days. They can wait for my stuff. I don’t care (well actually I kind of do, but really not today).

So if the sun is shining with you, enjoy. If it is raining, can I send you my work and you can do it if you have nothing better to do?
